From 5 to 20 November 1944 Sumner participated as a unit of Task Group 38.4 screening the fast carriers of Task Force 38 during air operations against resupply convoys of the Japanese that were intended to reinforce their positions around Ormoc Bay on Western Leyte, strikes on shipping in Manila Bay and strikes on airfields in the Clark Field-Subic Bay area.
