U.S.S. Allen M. Sumner DD-692
Track Charts

The following Track Charts were created using two sources of data. For the World War II Chart, the War Diary was used as it includes the ship's positions at sea.  For the remaining charts, the Smooth Deck Logs were used as these also contain the positions beginning with the entry for January 1, 1965 and continuing until the Sumner's decommissioning on August 15, 1973.  In both cases, the ship's position was logged three times a day; 0800, 1200 and 2000 by the Navigator.  Since there are as many as 12 hours between the reporting of the positions, the resulting Track Chart may appear inaccurate or even show the Sumner crossing land.  In a twelve hour period, at 17 knots, the distance traveled would be in the range of 235 miles, thus the plotting irregularities.  A second problem occurs from time to time in the data reported because of the many steps between "shooting the stars" and making these plots; the person taking the plot could have made a mistake, the transcription to the Quarterdeck Log could have been in error, the transfer to the "Smooth Deck Log" could have been in error and finally the transcription to a computer database could produce yet another problem.  The precision of the World Map Database that is being used is 1 second of Arc, thus any resulting error created by the Database should be insignificant.  If you have access to plotting information for the Sumner that is not presented below we would very much appreciate your contacting us.
