• January 26, 1944 - The SUMNER is commissioned
• February 12, 1944 - Underway on ship's power to Gravesend Bay, Long Island
• February 23, 1944 - Fired 5"/38 batteries for the first time
• March 15, 1944 - Training in Bermuda, first Underway Replenishment, operating with submarine R-6
• May 3, 1944 - Underway to Norfolk for daily OPS training
• August 21, 1944 - Underway from Norfolk to Trinidad escorting USS Missouri (BB-63) and USS Alaska (CB-1)
• August 25, 1944 - Mission complete, underway to the Panama Canal
• August 29, 1944 - SUMNER, MOALE and INGRAHAM go thru the Canal
• September 9, 1944 - Escorting the USS West Virginia from San Pedro, CA to Pearl Harbor
• October 24, 1944 - Escorting USS North Carolina from Pearl Harbor to Eniwetok
• November 11, 1944 - With TF 38 and USS Enterprise operating in heavy seas
• November 12, 1944 - More air OPS and refueling
• November 13, 1944 - Air OPS maneuvering with the USS Enterprise
• November 14, 1944 - Air OPS and CAP shoots down a snooper
• November 17, 1944 - Screening the USS Hornet and CDD 120 takes temporary screen command
• November 18, 1944 - Screening USS San Jacinto and Enterprise, USS Alabama joins formation
• November 19, 1944 - With the Enterprise, CAP shoots down three planes
• November 19, 1944 - Fire 40MM on enemy plane, first SUMNER shots in anger

• December 3, 1944 - The Battle heats up, SUMNER sinks an AKA, a DD and splashes a few planes
• December 6, 1944 - ComScreen (CDD 120) in SUMNER, evening air attacks
• December 13, 1944 - With TF 77 assault on Mindoro, air attacks from every quarter
• December 15, 1944 - Shore bombardment at Mindoro Island and more air attacks
• December 17, 1944 - Screening TF 77.8 from Mindoro Island to Leyte Gulf
• December 18, 1945 - Those wounded at Ormoc Bay are awarded the Purple Heart
• December 28, 1944 - With TF 77.14 patrolling off west coast of Mindoro Island
• December 29, 1944 - Escorting USS Phoenix (CL-46), USS Louisville (CA-28), USS Boise (CL-47) and USS Minneapolis (CA-36) to San Pedro Bay
