• January 3, 1945 - Task force 77 forming for assault on Lingayen Gulf, Luzon
• January 6, 1945 - Heavy attacks by Kamikaze aircraft - SUMNER gets hit
• January 7, 1945 - SUMNER's Flag at half mast, services and burial at sea for lost shipmates
• January 8, 1945 - Rescue LT Columbus L. Newburn who had been shot down by friendly fire - not SUMNER's, still under air attack
• January 10, 1945 - Still supporting landings and fighting off Kamikaze attacks
• January 18, 1945 - Underway for Manus Island, Admiralty Group for repairs, crossed the equator on this day without ceremony in honor of lost shipmates
• January 20, 1945 - Comments on some of the damage sustained from the Kamikaze attack
• January 27, 1945 - Temporary repairs complete begin trek to states, escorting USS Kadashan Bay (CVE-76)
• February 1, 1945 - Stopped for fuel at Majuro Atoll, Admiralty Islands
• February 6, 1945 - Stop at Pearl for fuel and join USS David W. Taylor (DD-551) steaming to San Francisco
• February 13, 1945 - Arrive at San Francisco for repairs to battle damage and offloaded all ammunition
• July 3, 1945 - Rescue of ENS W. D. Palmer who had crashed on a training flight off of the USS Takanis Bay (CVE-89)
• July 18, 1945 - Repairs complete SUMNER heads back alone for Pearl Harbor
• July 23, 1945 - Back at Pearl training new crews for other destroyers coming into the Fleet
• August 10, 1945 - CBM Lowther and MM1c Marney receive the Bronze Star with Combat "V"
• August 13, 1945 - Underway for Eniwetok and the combat zone with TG 12.3
• August 14, 1945 - Japan surrenders and SUMNER executes a 360º turn in celebration
• August 19, 1945 - Arrive at Eniwetok, Marshall Islands
• August 21, 1945 - Underway with TU 30.3.9 for Honshu, Japan
• September 2, 1945 - Surrender ceremony on the Missouri while SUMNER guards Tokyo Bay harbor entrance
• September 16, 1945 - SUMNER finally gets to enter Tokyo Bay
• September 19, 1945 - Change of Command ceremony - Captain Sampson reads his orders
• September 19, 1945 - Captain Howard reads his orders and takes command of the SUMNER
• September 22, 1945 - Underway escorting the USS INDEPENDENCE (CVL-22) to Saipan
• September 25, 1945 - Arrive at Saipan, Marianas Islands
• October 5, 1945 - Underway from Guam with USS INDEPENDENCE as TU 58.1.11 to Pearl Harbor
• October 19, 1945 - TU 38.1.3 headed for Seattle and Home
• October 27,1945 - MOALE and SUMNER in Longview, WA for Navy Day
• October 30, 1945 - With TU 30.3.2 headed to San Pedro, California not the Philippines!
• November 2, 1945 - Anchored in San Pedro Bay, ALNAV directives let many of the crew head home
• November 28, 1945 - Peacetime OPS begin with USS POINT CRUZ (CVE-119)
• December 4, 1945 - SUMNER in San Diego, her new home for a while
• December 12, 1945 - More carrier OPS with USS CORREGIDOR (CVE-58)
