reports aboard to film the upcoming tests
June 29, 1946 - Provide Taxi service for
the many observers
July 1, 1946 - The "Able" air
drop test explodes 19 miles from Sumner
July 25, 1946 - The "Baker"
underwater test and that afternoon Sumner is taking deep water samples
July 26, 1946 - Sumner finds a discolored
foamy patch of ocean and stops to investigate
July 27, 1946 - Sumner finds oil slick and
it tests 80 times radioactive tolerance levels
July 28, 1946 - F2c Ropka drops his rain
jacket overboard and jumps in after it, sent for radiological exam
July 30, 1946 - Sumner taxi service to
Kwajalein Atoll continues, today carrying General "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell, Major
General Anthony C. "Nuts" McAuliffe, Senator Carl A. Hatch, Senator
Leverett Saltonstall and Representative Chester E. Holifield.
August 10, 1946 - Sumner gets some action
and sinks the USS LCI 620 with her 5"/38 guns
August 15, 1946 - Operation Crossroads
complete Sumner arrives back at Pearl Harbor
August 17, 1946 - Squadron Seven sails on
for San Diego and home
