January 1, 1949 - The traditional mid-watch verse by LTJG R. D. McCrary
January 21, 1949 - Overhaul is almost complete, load ammunition
January 25, 1949 - Back in San Diego and begin daily OPS with the USS Segundo (SS-348)
February 23, 1949 - More fun with the bubbleheads aboard the USS Barbero (SS-317)
April 5, 1949 - After five years it is time to return to the Atlantic via the Canal
April 12, 1949 - Arrive at the Pacific side of the Canal
April 20, 1949 - Arrive at our new home - Norfolk, Virginia
May 9, 1949 - Carrier OPS in the Capes with the USS Siboney (CVE-112)
May 26, 1949 - Change of Command ceremony as CDR Dwight L. Johnson relieves CDR Dale Mayberry
June 1, 1949 - More bubblehead OPS with the USS Dogfish (SS-350) and the USS Halfbeak (SS-352)
June 17, 1949 - Yet more pig boats - the USS Irex (SS-482)
June 20, 1949 - Carrier OPS with the FDR, USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB-42)
August 4, 1949 - The Capes are getting very familiar as we carrier OP with the USS Siboney (CVE-112)
August 26, 1949 - Getting close to home now, Brooklyn Navy Yard where we were commissioned
August 30, 1949 - Carrier and ASW OPS with the USS Wright (CVL-49) and USS Conger (SS-477)
September 8, 1949 - Anchored out at Bloodsworth Island for gunnery training
September 20, 1949 - It's time to chase another sewer pipe - the USS Sea Leopard (SS-483)
September 23, 1949 - Back to Brooklyn with the USS Siboney (CVE-112)
October 11, 1949 - More bird farms and pig boats - USS Siboney (CVE-112) and USS Diablo (SS-479)
November 5, 1949 - Chasing the Siboney and she loses steering control
November 12, 1949 - While refueling from the USS Waccamaw (AO-109) SOSA H. E. Dixon falls overboard, although rescued by the USS Fox (DD-779) he dies from exposure. Remember our shipmate.
December 23, 1949 - Santa shows up early, what a present - Meierdierks and Mahoney!
The rest of the year is spent at our new home NOB NORVA
