• January 1, 1959 - The traditional mid-watch verse by ENS Donald G. Brown
• January 19, 1959 - Time for ammo replenishment and some sea trials
• February 16, 1959 - Now for some Carrier OPS with the Roosevelt and the Intrepid and on to the Med
• March 2, 1959 - Arrive at Gibraltar and our new XO LCDR Ellis reports to relieve LCDR Warfield
• March 6, 1959 - On to the French coast and Golfe Juan
• March 25, 1959 - Unreps or resupply at sea from the USS Diamond Head , USS Mississinewa , USS Altair and USS Reigel
• April 1, 1959 - Ahh, springtime in Naples......... or time to foul the anchor
• April 5, 1959 - Menton, France and "The Whale Boat" is rescued by civilians
• April 20, 1959 - Four Generals and other big shots from Norway ride the Sumner taxi
• April 23, 1959 - Back to Italy and a few days in Genoa
• May 9, 1959 - Into port in Suda Bay, Crete and the flag is at half-mast
• May 16, 1959 - Into the Mid East and Beirut, Lebanon
• May 19, 1959 - Getting ready at Port Said, Egypt for transit of the Suez Canal
• May 20, 1959 - Rendezvous with the USS Gatling and begin independent duty in the Persian Gulf area
• May 24, 1959 - Our first stop of the assignment - Massawa, Eritrea
• May 29, 1959 - Really getting off the beaten path, we stop at Berbera, British Somaliland
• June 2, 1959 - Stop for some fuel in the Aden Protectorate
• June 11, 1959 - We are SOPA and we are at Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia
• June 20, 1959 - Nothing like a tropical island - Bahrain - and endless sand
• June 25, 1959 - We are a long way from Sixth Fleet now - Karachi, Pakistan
• July 4, 1959 - Back at Massawa looking for fireworks
• July 10, 1959 - Making our way through the Canal heading back to the MED
• July 13, 1959 - Our last stop in the Middle East at Iskenderun, Turkey
• July 16, 1959 - More island hopping, this time Rhodes
• July 21, 1959 - Time for a climb up the Acropolis for a good look at Athens
• July 28, 1959 - Lets try transiting another canal, how about Venice
• August 4, 1959 - A little more Italian flavor in Taranto
• August 8, 1959 - Slowly head back west with a stop at Palma, Majorica
• August 18, 1959 - Another stop in Spain at Pollensa Bay
• August 20, 1959 - We can see the Atlantic again as we pause at Gibraltar
• August 30, 1959 - Down the Elizabeth River and we are home at NOB
• September 30, 1959 - Hurricane Grace is in the area and we anchor in the Bay
• October 16, 1959 - Captain Oller is relieved by Captain Porterfield at a ceremony on the pier
• October 30, 1959 - Into drydock to check out our underwater propulsion and find rust and corrosion
• December 11, 1959 - Out of the shipyard for some trials and run at 30 knots for a while
• December 22, 1959 - Back at NOB in time for the Holidays
