1961 Log Book

• January 1, 1961 - The traditional mid-watch verse by ENS R. W. Barrett
• January 3, 1961 - You will have to get a map out for this one, we arrive at Kharg Island
• January 6, 1961 - RADM Jackson COMIDEASTFOR spends the day with us
• January 8, 1961 - Back to Sitra, Bahrain for a day of rest and Services
• January 14, 1961 - Heading back the way we came and stop at Aden
• January 20, 1961 - Time for another run through the Big Ditch and miles of sand in Egypt
• January 23, 1961 - Another visit to the home of the Olympics at Piraeus, Greece
• January 27, 1961 - Looks like a big volcano over there? We are in Naples
• February 9, 1961 - A day at sea, go alongside the USS Mississinewa, USS Wrangell, USS Truckee, USS Hyades, USS Massey and a helo from the USS Altair
• February 18, 1961 - We've been here before - Golfo Di Palmas, Sardinia
• February 22, 1961 - At anchor in Aranci Bay, Sardinia after a few days of games
• February 25, 1961 - Another gulf, this time the French Coast near Cannes
• March 9, 1961 - Get the pasta plates out we are in La Spezia, Italy
• March 13, 1961 - How come these guys have black hands? We're in Sicily
• March 19, 1961 - One more stop in Pollensa Bay, we must be headed home
• March 21, 1961 - Stop off to see a bull fight at Rota, Spain
• March 31, 1961 - Look at all the folks on the pier, hey this is Mayport!
• May 17, 1961 - Underway to Charleston, offload our ammo and get ready for a face lift
• At this time the Navy changed to hand written Logs so easy reading is over!
• June 1, 1961 - We are being FRAM'ed - Fleet Rehabilitation And Modernization
• June 30, 1961 - Into drydock with our sister, the USS Moale (DD-693)
• July 18, 1961 - Change of Command as Captain Flynn relieves Captain Porterfield
• July 21, 1961 - Three weeks in the drydock and we are back at the pier
• October 19, 1961 - Six months and two days later we finally get underway again
• November 14, 1961 - Another day of trials
• December 6, 1961 - Time for more trials - Inserv
• December 20, 1961 - A bit more sea trials before Christmas
• December 21, 1961 - Reload the magazines with 2,364 rounds of 5" ammunition
• December 27, 1961 - Get an overnight trial in before our New Year's party
• Well we have been here since last May but you will have to go to the Log for 1962 to find out when we finally got done being FRAMed !
