January 1, 1962 - The traditional mid-watch verse by ENS R. W. Caulkins
January 2, 1962 - Arrive back in Mayport from FRAM II conversion in Charleston Naval Shipyard
January 5, 1962 - After a lengthy vacation arrive at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for training
January 9, 1962 - Follow a typical day of GITMO's Refresher Training
January 28, 1962 - A weekend off in Montego Bay, Jamaica
February 16, 1962 - GITMO complete, next NGFS training at Culebra Island, Puerto Rico
February 16, 1962 - Quick fuel stop at San Juan, Puerto Rico before heading home
February 18, 1962 - Back to Mayport for a few weeks with the family
March 1, 1962 - Been sitting too long, time for OPS in the Jacksonville Operating Area
March 9, 1962 - Underway for Pollensa Bay, Mallorca, Spain and 6th Fleet Operations
March 15, 1962 - Typical lovely day at sea on the Atlantic - winds to 41 MPH and seas at 10 feet
March 20, 1962 - Arrive at Golfo de Palma, Spain for duty with the 6th Fleet
March 23, 1962 - Anchor in Golfo di Palma, Sardinia for the day
April 2, 1962 - Pulled into Salonika Bay in Thessaloniki, Greece
April 17, 1962 - More fun in Greece, this time its Kavalla
April 25, 1962 - What a typical day on a Med cruise with the 6th Fleet was like
April 28, 1962 - Visit the home of the Knights - Valetta, Malta
May 6, 1962 - Back to Aranci bay, Sadinia for a memorial service - anybody know what the service was for?
May 8, 1962 - Back to Italy for more pizza, the port LaSpezia
May 19, 1962 - Another quick stop at Aranci Bay, Sardinia
May 24, 1962 - A chance to see the wonders of Rome as we stop at Civitavecchia, Italy
June 2, 1962 - Yet another stop at Aranci bay, Sardinia
June 7, 1962 - Anchor in the harbor at Golfe Juan, France
June 8, 1962 - Heavy winds drive the Sumner aground, attempts made to free her
June 8, 1962 - Finally broken free and go to sea for trials to determine damage
June 12, 1962 - Enter Drydock in Toulon, France for repairs from grounding damage
June 19, 1962 - Visit one of the beautiful areas - Golfe de Napoute, Cannes, France
June 22, 1962 - A quick move down the coast to St. Jean Cap Ferrat, France
July 2, 1962 - A few days in Napoli - Naples, Italy
July 12, 1962 - Napoli was so much fun we came back again
July 21, 1962 - Moving along the coast, make a stop at LaSepzia, Italy
July 25, 1962 - We know the way so another day in Sardinia
August 3, 1962 - Another Italian port, Messina on the island of Sicily
August 13, 1962 - Yet again another stop at Sardinia
August 17, 1962 - Back to the mainland at Naples
September 1, 1962 - Follow the coast again to San Remo, Italy
September 10, 1962 - Back to Golfe Juan, France but this time without the wind!
October 2, 1962 - Back home in Mayport and back with the Second Fleet
October 31, 1962 - Take part in the Cuban missle crisis as part of the blockade operating with the USS Okinawa (LPH-3) and the USS Thetis Bay (LPH-6)
November 4, 1962 - USS Zellars (DD-777) and Sumner chase a submarine contact
November 10, 1962 - Still working the blockade now with the USS Lexington (CVA-16)
November 13, 1962 - Operating close enough that we run in and out of Mayport many times for fuel and water
November 24, 1962 - Blockade still going and now operating with the USS Saratoga (CVA-60)
November 30, 1962 - Blockade operations complete, return to Mayport
Other than one day of OPS we spend December resting at home
