1964 Log Book

• January 1, 1964 - The traditional mid-watch verse by ENS J. W. Gould
• January 6, 1964 - Up the river to the Jacksonville Shipyard and into the drydock
• January 9, 1964 - Out of the drydock in heavy rain and back to Mayport
• January 16, 1964 - Underway to Cape Kennedy as part of the Gemini Recovery team
• January 31, 1964 - Get in a little Type Training on the way home
• February 18, 1964 - On our way to San Juan and get the old girl up to 31 knots
• February 24, 1964 - Take part in Operation Springboard out of San Juan, Puerto Rico
• March 3, 1964 - Spend a few hours in beautiful St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands
• March 8, 1964 - Winters over so we head back to Mayport
• April 8, 1964 - OPS off Jacksonville with the Division
• May 5, 1964 - More OPS in the JAX OP-AREA
• May 28, 1964 - RADM Duncan, COMCRUDESLANT stops by to give us a look over
• June 4, 1964 - Pull into Annapolis to pick up the Midshipmen for a little cruising
• June 19, 1964 - Make it across the big pond and transit the Kiel Canal
• Later Same Day - tie up at the Federal German Naval Academy, Flensberg, Germany
• June 30, 1964 - Have some fun with the Russians and then anchor in Tralhavet, Sweden
• July 1, 1964 - Division 161 arrives in Stockholm, Sweden for a little liberty
• July 7, 1964 - Another restful day going back through the Kiel Canal
• July 8, 1964 - Go looking for windmills in Rotterdam, The Netherlands
• July 24, 1964 - We have trained them all we can, so we drop the Middies off in Norfolk
• July 25, 1964 - Back home again in good old Mayport
• August 18, 1964 - On our way to Key West for Sonar Training School duties
• August 22, 1964 - Back to Mayport and wind up fifth from the pier
• August 26, 1964 - Economy trials and gunnery training which can be dangerous
• September 28, 1964 - Back to Cape Kennedy to help out our NASA friends
• October 8, 1964 - A beautiful little island, we stop in Bermuda
• The Logs for the next three weeks indicate only "Steaming in accordance with COMSUBLANT OP-ORDER 39-64 WHILE CONDUCTING CLASSIFIED OPERATIONS."  An informed source has related what was going on - "we had telemetering equipment and tech-reps aboard to receive the signals from Polaris missiles that were being tested at the time. We would sit in one spot for a long time while waiting for the missiles to launch. We bought some good fishing rods and the crew did some fishing while we waited."
• November 1, 1964 - Our classified OPS over we pull back in to Bermuda
• November 4, 1964 - Back with our NASA friends at Cape Kennedy
• November 5, 1964 - Once again, it's good to be home
• December 8, 1964 - Head for Charleston, offload all our ammunition and enter the Shipyard
• December 22, 1964 - Into the drydock and take a rest on the keel blocks
• December 23, 1964 - Change of Command as Captain Baty relieves Captain Miller
• It's the Holidays !
