I served aboard the Allen M. Sumner DD-692 61-63 Please add my name to the crews list. Thank You Chris Johnson
6-14-04 I was surfing around trying to find info on the 7th Fleet for March, 1962, and came upon your website. I am amazed at the amount of information and pictures that you've collected and organized. Your hard work is miraculous! What a tribute to our Navy, USS Sumner and our history. Your website puts mine to shame. I've much work to do!
While surfing the net today I came across the below link having to do with the DASH system. Figured I would post it so all those that served in the DASH crew could view. I included just one link here but if you click the "Home" button at the bottom it will take you to the home page of this site. In it are 13 links within the site that are related to the Gyrodyne Helicopters Co. Lots of pictures on the site. The link; http://www.gyrodynehelicopters.com/dash_weapon_system.htm
Thought you all might like to know the USS MOALE, DD693 now has a website....(www.ussmoaleassn.com).... Keep paddling.
Just serving the web and happened upon this site. My Father Daniel W. Bosqui served on this ship. He was a Machinist mate. I was very young and do not remember to much. I miss my Father he passed away in October of 1995. The Navy was his life and he was not the same after he retired. God bless all of you who served our country.
Please update my e-mail address, I changed internet providers.
I just found this great web site on the AMS. I served on board 1/57 --- 1/59. I still read my Med cruise annual. I see a few of my old shipmates listed in the guest book. I was a SNGM and Dennis Boyette GM1 was my boss. I'd like to hear from any of my old shipmates they probably remember my knickname Granny. .
I WAS ABOARD THE SUMNER FROM 1957 TO 1960.MEET ALOT TO ME TO FIND THIS WEB SITE. HAD SOME GOOD TIMES WITH BRUCE GOWER,NORMAN CHAMBLEE,SLATER,ANDCATFISH CONNERS.SURE LIKE TO KNOW WHERE THERE NOW. THANKS ALOT
Great Web site, I am gratefull to the blokes who included photo's of the Hobart D39 in their collections, I remember you well. Trying to avoid spam my email is fith4221@tpg.com and you can add the .au at the end.
My father was on the USS Sumner in 1941,1942, his name is James Chesnutt, unfortunately we lost him a few years back, I'm just interested in what his life was like back then. I have many old pictures, but no nothing about them..
Ran across this website and was amazed. I served on AMS 1952-1953, two Caribbean cruises, and the big one around the world, including Task Force 77 in Korea. What memories come to mind! Would love to hear from any shipmates.
Looking for someone who might have information about the DD-692 XO Al P. Carpenter (1955-58). Needing photo of him and/or contact with any of his family members. Al was an Lt. on the SIGSBEE DD-502 during WW II. I understand he passed away in 1998. Last known address I had was Athens, Georgia. BTW most comprehensive DD site I've come across. A job well done!
I served on the USS John W. Weeks from 1962-66, a Sumner class DD. You have a nice website.
I just read the guestbook entry from the guy who was on Misspillion and it brought back an old memory for me. I remember the Salimone (AO) had a giant rocking chair up on deck with a giant stuffed woman in it, with a big sign that said, " SHE MAY BE OLD, BUT SHE STILL PUTS OUT" they were proud of what they could do... and our morale was kept up, because we all laughed and were able to relax just a smidgin'......
Great webpage. Glad our shipmates are doing this. I was on the Mispillion (A0-105) "Nulli Secundus."
My father is Ronald Overstrom and he served from 59-62. Please email me if you have any memories you'd like to share about him!!!
I served aboard SUMNER FROM 1956-1960 IN THE AFTER ENGINE ROOM
Reported aboard the Sumner in late72/ until her decommissioning. If I ever learned to love to cook, it was aboard the Sumner. She was a fine ship to live and to be of service to
ALL HANDS WILL HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR by order of the moral officer......haa haa have safe holidays......tb
Served aboard AMS, 55-56-57, was BM3, 2nd.DIV.WITH OLD Jim Whitehead, also GM1 Thompson and GM1 Jones.
********** bore clear mt53
Hey Tom, How would you like to get him in the sights of Mt. 53? "Ten rounds-rapid fire-Load/Fire"
we finally caught saddam, he dug his own grave and the army refused to let him stay in it. hhmmm
Served on DD692 and DD863 from 70 to 74. Would like to hear from lost friends.
I was proud to serve on the Sumner 1945-1946 as Fireman First Class. I left her just before she was to sail for Operation Crossroads for the A bomb detonation @ Bikini Atoll.
Just want to say hello to my fellow shipmates who served with me on the USS Sumner from 1970-71.
I served aboard the AM Sumner from Aug. or Sep. 1966 until shortly after our return from Viet Nam, after which I was transferred. Like almost everyone else I lost contact with everybody. Hoping to meet many of you in Portland Maine next year and renew old acquaintances.
Just found this website. I was on Sumner from Dec. 1968-June 1972, I was a QM3 Very glad to see so many of my shipmates also found the site. I plan to contact them. What I remember most about Sumner was we stayed at sea a lot, and the crew was the best.
Sumner was my 1st Destroyer, after a year on an AKA I finally was where I wanted to be. This was 1949. Served aboard others, George K McKenzie DD836 Tinge DD539,Mc Donough DLG8 and Tender Yellowstone. Was an FN in Sumner retired as ETCM '72. Will never forget the thrill of DD692
My father served aboard the Alan M. Sumner during World War II from 1945 to 1946.
WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE CREW PIC'S WITH ID'S. HARD TO RESOLVE WHO THESE PEOPLE ARE AFTER 30+ YEARS
On board 49-52..Kept in touch with some.. Stumbled on to the website kinda by accident, and was blown away.. thanks to the creators.. The ship, the crew, and the places have never been far from my thoughts. Trying to reconnect with the crew...Let's hear from you......
I served aboard the Sumner from early 1959 thru December of 1962. Three days before I was to be discharged, the Cuban Missile Crisis began. I was notified that my enlistment was extended for one year. She was a good ship with a good crew and I was proud to have served aboard the best ship in the Navy.
Great Site
I was aboard AMS from 1972 until decommissioning, then I went to the relieving ship DD863,which I had just got off of. I later went back to Philly and got parts off AMS for DD 863. I was a GMG2 at the time. I retired in 1988 as an MAC.
Well designed website. Reading some of these stories shows tin can sailors on any ship were about the same. I was an SO2 on USS Trathen(DD-530) and USS Blue(DD-744) 1955-1957.
Captain Percy Beaman was my grandfather. He was a great person, yes was. Just wanted to say that he passed away last year from cancer. Salute!
I served aboard AMS for a short time in '65 as an MMFN. Went aboard in Gitmo. Remember the body we picked up off the coast of Santo Domingo. Remember Bobby Moore, MM2 Tew, Frank Roman, Orlando Maestas and Bob Puterbaugh among others. Seems to me we were always on water hours during that time and on port and starboard watches. Was never so tired in my life. Went on to nuke school and spent 4 years on the Big E. Left after 6 years as an MM1.
Served on the good ship AMS 72 - decommissioning. The site has brought back some memories. Like when Billings was busted back to Seaman, eh Richard?
I BELIEVE I SAILED WITH 6 DESTROYERS OF WHICH I THINK ONE OF THEM WAS THE USS SUMNER. I WAS ABOARD THE CARRIER VALLEY FORGE IN 1954. WE RAN INTO A HURRICANE AND THE DESTROYERS TOOK COVER IN THE AZORES AND THE CARRIER RODE OUT THE STORM AT SEA. CAN ANYONE VERIFY THIS ACCOUNT. PLEASE E-MAIL ME IF YOU HAVE ANY INFO.
Viet Nam Vets Added by dd692 on Monday, May 26, 2003 @ 10:29 AM I am so very glad history has changed and our brave guys and gals are welcomed home with the open arms of most of America. I thank you all for that. As a teenager in the 60's I was mad as censored with the treatment our troops were getting from our not so truthful reporters. It was so bad it almost caused another civil war. Please remember, most Viet Nam Vets never received a "thank you" from anyone except fellow military and relatives. The media saw to that. Remember all the TV shows and movies where the Vets were depicted as drug crazed dope fiend killers? Well it was just plain crap. Not to take anything away from the current love of our brave troops, but if you run into a Vet who may be 47 years old or older, ask him or her if they served in Viet Nam. Whether they did or not give them a hug and a big "Thank You". You may never know how important it is. DD692 USN MM1 1971-1980 (I did not serve in Viet Nam)
I served on the Sumner during 1969-70. This is a nice web site. Thanks, Jim.
I served on the Great Allen M. Sumner DD692 (1950-1954).I was a TM3. Chief JD (Shaky) Brawner, Carl Moorehead, Roy Noake, Ken Darrow, Bob Anair, Robert Bruce, Jose Gallegos, Robert (Ike) Kleeman were all members of the Torpedo Gang. Chief Johnson later replaced Chief Brawner. I was Best Man for Carl when he married Jane and we stayed in contact until 1966 when thru moves we lost contact. About 4 months ago a friend told me about this web site and as a result I was able to make contact with Carl again. A week ago today my wife and I returned home from attending our First Sumner reunion May 15-18th where we were re-united with Carl and his wife Jane along with 13 other shipmates aboard when we were. We also met and visited with many other ex-Sumner sailors. We are looking forward to Portland Maine 2004 and hope to see many more shipmates there. I would also like to hear from any other shipmates that run across this. The reunion was very well organized and this Web site is the Best! "Thanks"
I have been appointed Allen M. Sumner Association Chaplain. I promise to serve this position with Honor & Pride. If for some unfortunate reason you may need an up lifting, or maybe you think I need up lifting don't hesitate to call or e-mail or drop a note, Bobby Moore, P.O. Box 347, Bernice, La. 71222, 1-318-368-6566, bomoo11@aol.com ; Thank you.
My father, William F. Walker was an F1c on the Sumner from 1945-46. He passed away in 1969 when I was three. If anyone has recollections of him please contact me. Thank you! And thank you to ALL who served our country on the U.S.S. Allen M. Sumner!
Was among the crew from 1/72 to decommissioning in 8/73. Good to see some of us still remember.
Hi, my Dad was on the U.S.S. Allen M. Sumner DD-692 in 1943-45. He passed away in 1998. He was S2c Harold M. Grow. I am his son Doug Grow if anyone knew him Please respond ! Thanks.
I just found this site tonight. It is very cool. My dad Merle Rush was on the Sumner in 54 and 55. It is neat to see him remembered here. He passed away in a hunting accident in 1985. Thanks to you all for your service. I proudly support our troops.
Served from 1965-1968 Viet Nam Vet. RD-2
FINE WEB SITE SERVED ON BARTON ,CONE AND JOHN R PIERCE
I salute our men and women in uniform, particularly those serving in harms-way in the noble cause, that is the Iraq war. I served aboard the Damato DD-871, 1966-70. PLease check out my web, dedicated to the sailors who gave her life and a personality, 1945 - 1980's decommissioning.
Served on ASM from '72-'73(when decommissioned) as an MMFN. Was my first ship. Good to see sites like this out there. Brings back fond memories.
C. J. BEERS WAS MY CO ON THE DIXON. LOVE TO TALK TO HIM..
Looking forward to seeing a bunch of you guys in May. My wife and I will be in Jax for the reunion. Lots of catching up to do. I'd tell stories here; but, I think FCC would come looking for me. Thanks Bobby Moore for getting me interested in this site/reunion/emails. Can't believe it's been 35 years since I've seen any of you. I'm really getting anxious now; and, sorry that I didn't try harder to make it last year. See you soon!

Hi to All. I was the very young, Green Horn SN Kid with very little brains and in big trouble all the time, on Liberty, and while on the AMS. Always and still striking for SMSN to SM3. It was a great adventure, Thanks to all...Bob McLaughlin
I am looking for a man named R.C. Powell. He was Co. Cmd'r. BT1 at Naval Training Center San Diego in August 1950. I have information that a R. C. Powell BT2 was an enlisted man on the Sumner from 1949 to 1950. Could they be the same man?????? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks for your help. God bless you all for the contribution you have made toward keeping America free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I SERVED ON THE AMS FROM LATE 67 THRU LATE 69. MADE THE SECRET CUBA MISSION, GITMO, AND MED CRUISE. I GOT OUT THE MINUTE THE GANGPLANK WENT DOWN IN MAYPORT AFTER THE MED. CRUISE!!!!! 10/10/69
Served on the AMS from 70-73 was a QM3 among the fellows I used to party with were Mark Henry, Bill Jones, Dick Hare a.k.a. rabbit, Dan Uziel, Rick Billings and Rich Ritter. Some of you might remember me by my nickname "otter," a name I'm glad that was decommissioned with the old dd692.
SO2, Served on the AMS July '50-Feb '53 Just came onto web site and look forward to contacting old shipmates. Frank Nekrasz, answer my e-mail. Also Earl Coker.
I served on the "ALLEN M SUMNER" in 1959. I had transferred form the " USS MASSEY-DD778 ". I was in the "FT" section. I was discharged from the "AMS" in September of 1959. I was just a "FTMSN" at the time, later having the rate changed to "FTGSN". I can recall FT1 Dean, FT Delong, FT Allen, FT Strong and others that have names that escape me. Would really like to hear from any crew members aboard at that time.
I'm looking for GMG2 Billy J. Butler. He served aboard 1962-63. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Served aboard AMS from just prior to leaving Mayport for FRAM in 1961 until discharge in December 1963. SOG2
Sailed on the mighty Allen M from late 69 to 71. Still keep in touch with 2 shipmates. It's time for a reunion. So heave to and trice up.
Aboard the John Paul Jones DD-932.On board 12-60-7-63. Great web site.We have a web-site. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/USS_JPJ/ http://www.ussjohnpauljones.org/ Found your site on Tin Can Sailor.
Wife of Frank McDougall, plank owner, so happy to read about the history of the USS Summer. I met my husband after the war and found this to be of much interest.
I rode the USS Rowan (DD-782) from 1954 to 1957 and left as FT3. I am currently the Historian and newsletter editor for the Rowan Reunion Association. We have a website at www.rowan.addr.com. You have a GREAT site! I love the sea stories. They remind me of similar incidents on the old Rowan. It was a little rough back then but I wouldn't take anything for those experiences now. Keep up the good work. BRAVO ZULU to all you "Short Gearing" folks.
I "saved" this site so that I can peruse it as I get the chance to look around. I was reading a "tin can" bulletin board and was referred to this DD by Tony Cowart (BM1). I was on USS Beale DDE-471, 58-60 and USS Brough DE-148, 60-61 (RM2). I enjoy surfing Destroyer sites and this one is really great.
I served on the Sumner in 1959 through 1961. Home port was Norfolk, Va. Moved to Mayport, Fl. I was discharged while we were in Charleston, S.C. in 1961. Made to Med trips and we went to Pakistan and the Persian Gulf both times. Sonarman third class.
Glad to see a sight like this
Great web site bringing back many memories both good and bad. One of the funny events was when we were in Albany and Rosie Clooney came aboard. Captain Johnson was asked to play some of her records over the ships pa system and he refused. She wasn't too dismayed but had to run for cover when the crew started to try and pinch her.
I was thrilled when my daughter found the Sumner web site. I am the widow of EMC John E. Williamson who served aboard Sumner from OCT. 3, 1962 to June 5, 1968. He had formerly served aboard the USS O'Brien, USS Barton, USS Decker, USS Lamons, USS Weaver, USS Vogelesang and USS Shenandoah. On his retirement in June 1972 as an EMC, after 30 years of service, he was Chief Master-at-Arms at Naval Air Technical Training Center, NAS, Jacksonville, FL. He then worked for the city for 17 years in the electrical department. EMC Williamson died on Nov. 14, 1996 and is buried in Penney Farms Cemetery, not far from our home in Green Cove Springs, FL. His memories of life aboard the Sumner and serving with his shipmates were the highlights of his naval career. The original poems I composed we set to music we selected on that old Akai reel-to-reel he brought home from one cruise. I had no idea he had passed them along but hope they are well received by others. The other long poem about the Sumner and its history I also wrote, but was writing under the name of Katherine Williamson then. As a Navy wife, I remember many of my husband's shipmates myself and still recall the thrill of waiting the ship's return from one cruise or another. Thanks to all who put together such a great web page in honor of "one of its kind" and the men who served aboard.
SM3 served on board Jan 1962 thru Sept 1963. Has anyone heard from Bob Vann or Steve Young?
Nice Web Site. Was on the Ingraham 694 jan.61 to may.63

My grandfather's brother, William Amos Goad II, was in the Army, 77th Division, at the battle of Ormoc. The Antelope Valley Genealogical Society, Lancaster, California, is writing a book on WWII Veterans, which will include William Goad. He had an Army account of the battle from a 1945 newsletter, "The Liberty Torch", which will also be included in the book. Thank you for more information and a different viewpoint of this battle.
FORMER TIN CAN SAILOR, SERVED ON THE EUGENE A. GREENE DDR-711 FROM 7-59 TO 7-62. VERY IMPRESSIVE AND INFORMATIVE WEB SITE GOD BLESS AND GOOD JOB
On 29 July 1960 at 1740L a LTjg Painter and at 1745L a LTjg R. G. Diehl, Jr had the watch when an A3D went over the side from the CVA Saratoga. I would very much like to talk to them about what they recall happened . My father Cdr Charles T. Frohne was the aircraft commander.

I SERVED ABOARD THE ALLEN M. SUMNER DD-692 FROM 1-26-1944 TO 7-25-1945. I REMEMBER WELL THE COMMISSIONING. ON 12-1&2 1944 JUST PRIOR TO ENTERING ORMOC BAY, MY HELPER BKR 3C WALTER PEDERSON WAS WOUNDED AND RETURNED TO THE STATES. HIS REPLACEMENT WAS S2C SAMUEL ZAMBORAS. WE WERE HIT BY A JAP SUICIDE PLANE IN LINGAYEN GULF ON 1-6-1945,14 MEN WERE KILLED AND 29 WOUNDED. AFTER WE WERE PATCHED UP WE RETURNED TO HUNTERS POINT, CA DRY DOCK, AFTER THE SHIP WAS REPAIRED I WAS TRANSFERRED TO BAKE SHOP IN WASHINGTON, DC WHERE I STAYED UNTIL NOVEMBER 1945, WENT BACK TO SCHOOL TO BECOME AN ACCOUNTANT, HOPE SOME PLANK OWNERS REMEMBER ME, AND THANKS FOR ALL THE GOOD HISTORY THAT IS IN THE TUBE.
Served on the Allen M '62 to May '64. RDSN...Thanks for this web site. Even tho AMS was sold for scrap, tradition lives on thru what you have here. Hopefully I might be able to make contact with some of those I served with thru this website.
If you haven't taken the time to listen to the Sounds of Vietnam, you are missing a treat. This is from a snipe that wasn't able to see the splashes etc. Brought back some memories. Thanks Mort, Doug, and of course our Web Master. See you in Mobile.
I served aboard the AMS 1951 thru 1955. Would like e-mail from past crew members. I was in the forward engine room 1951 Thru May, 1955, and left the AMS a MM2 in May, 55 while in Cuba. Looking forward to meeting some of you at the reunion in Mobile, Alabama.
I love this sight. There is a lot of good information and it will take me forever to see it all. I just want to thank the webmaster and congratulate him on such a fine job he has done. Keep up the good work. Also, are there any former AMS sailors that live in Colorado? If so, please email me. You might just like what we have at our Reserve Center. Or anyone else, for that matter. EM1 J Vernon, USN (soon to be retired, I hope)
I was a QM2 on the Sumner . Left the Sumner in 1961 after 3 yrs aboard. Nice job on the Web page.
Had some great times on the old Allen M. I did the last med cruse before it was changed to a reserve ship, then it was decommissioned. Hey Danny Mathews, I see your name on the roster.
had a lot of good times
I just checked my previous entry and noticed that for some reason my website URL did not appear. I am resubmitting my entry plus typing out the URL here in case this doesn't work again. I have a very large website which is mostly about the navy. One part of it is a tribute to my dad, Bill Newbauer, who is a WW2 navy vet. I invite you to read his story including the landing at Iwo Jima. It is interesting reading. Here is the URL: http://navysight.homestead.com
Nice site, brought back some bad memories and many good ones. I still have friends I made onboard 69-72. EM3. Would be glad to hear from lost but not forgotten friends. Especially R-div officer Mr.Wilson and Cap n Crunch LOL. Jack Reyer when you see this you better email unless you want another green dobber.
I was on Sumner 1969-1971, serving as ASW Officer and then fleeted up to Operations Officer. Many fond memories and many lessons learned on my first ship, especially from then LT. Bruce Liska (Weps), then LCDR Craig Preston (XO), and CAPT. Laighton. I later had command of the USS Elmer Montgomery (FF-1082) from 1986-1988 and retired as CAPTAIN, USN in 1995.
I enjoyed serving aboard the SUMNER from April, 1956 to July 1957 as RD3. Was then transferred to DE-369 Thaddeus Parker, homeported in Brooklyn, NY. We were a reserve training ship. Became a Blue Nose aboard the Sumner on my last cruise in 1957. Our captain when I parted the Sumner was CDR. C.J. Beers. I recall we were the flagship for Desron 16, enjoyed the 6th fleet 6 month cruise best of all. We hit every port in the Med.
Proud member of ship's company from fall of 1955 (straight out of RM school Bainbridge, MD) to summer of 1959 when AMS was going to the Med again and enlistment was just about up. Transferred to USS Mullinnix DD-944 and processed out. Great ship, good shipmates. Great Web Site.
AHOY SHIPMATES! What a pleasure it was to discover the GREAT website on the best two years I spent in the Navy...USS Allen M. Sumner DD-692. (1955 - 1957) A special thanks to Tony Cowart and to all those contributors who have helped re-kindle many fond memories afloat and in many great liberty sites. I have a great photo taken in Gitmo with about ten shipmates from the ET gang, radio shack etc. As I recall, we were celebrating the upcoming departure to civilian status of one of the RMs. I will post the photo with names included at a later date. I'm presently an electronics engineer, married, three children and would give a lot to breathe some of that salt air and stack gas again.
RM3 1960-62
Just found the web page from an e-mail from Tony Cowart. Thanks. Great page, I've just spent a few hours looking at various parts of the site. I served aboard from 57 - 59 as a YN3 & YN2. Retired from the Navy in 1980 as a YNCS.
I served on the Sumner from 64 to 66. I worked in the main engine room. Anyone on board during this time email me. I would like to hear from you .
Great site, good job. Served aboard Charles R. Ware (DD-865). If anyone of you should have any pictures of the Ware, please get in touch with me. I am going to start a web site for the Ware. Thanks
I just stumbled into your site while navigating my way through USSORLECK.ORG. Looks like I have another favorite site to bookmark. I served on the USS Orleck DD 886 in 65 & 66 and aboard the USS DeHaven DD 727 in 66 & 67, the whole time in WESTPAC and around Vietnam. The sea-stories are terrific. (I wonder why my memory isn't that good.) You have a fine page here. Keep up the good work. I'll be back. BZ
This is notice, that S1c James Charles Buclary had passed away in 1947 in a train/car accident in metro San Diago, calif. I am his nephew, James Apolon Buclary, namesake, and wish to hear about him from any shipmates. I am really in the dark, but have heard from relatives that I am very much like him. I still don'rt know what that means?? What was he like and who was he. I was born in 1952. For reference , I am considered the adventerous and off beat ladies man of our family. I always seeked adventure and fun, (with a responsible undertone). I married very late because I didn't want to be tied down, and partied harty, and never feared danger and always helped others., I am now a Philadelphia Housing Policeman working narcotics in the projects. IS THERE any, similarity? Yes or NO , please let me know who he was. My family is ultra conservative and are resistant in really telling the truth about him. All inquiries are confidential, as I, Only I need to know. Thanks, Jim
Sumner was my first ship out of MM school in 1958. I went aboard as MMFA and left in 1961 as MM3. Served in forward engine room under MM1 Raulerson and can remember most guys listed in crew 58-60. Went on to Manley DD940 & then got curious about nuclear power so wound up in subs for the rest of my career. Retired in 77 as MMCS(SS). I would love to hear from any old shipmates. Thanks for a great site and I look forward to hearing from anyone.
The following is a phone number and address for Walter Van Gorp who served on board the AMS during WW II. (708) 758-3627.He lives at 22323 Merrill Saulk Village, Illinois. I've tried calling him on several occasions lately, but haven't been able to make the connection. By the way, Bobby Moore, if you're reading this, I apologize for blasting you with the salt water hose when you were strung up in the semi-rigid stretcher the day before we crossed the equator on the way back from Nam. I can't remember, but I assume you must have had your revenge the next day. I remember having a sore back side after being walloped with the cut up hoses as we crawled along the starboard side from the bow to the fantail. I hope you're doing well! Dennis.
I was invited to view the USS SUMNER web site by Tony Cowart BM1 and I can understand why he is so proud of the site: WELL DONE TO ALL YOU SUMNER CREW MEMBERS. I really enjoyed reading all the material and photos of the history of the USS SUMNER and its former crewmembers. As a TCS, I too am proud that I served in the world's greatest Navy. USS JENKINS DD447 PEARL HARBOR, HAWAII 1959-1961
I served aboard the Sumner from June 1969-March 1971 after having been transferred at my request from the O'Brien(DD725)March 1968-May1969.I made 2nd class Radarman and my fondest memory was seeing Princess Grace when we were in port in Monaco part of December 1970 and January 1971.Gosh all these years have gone bye and I have heard from anyone until I found this great website !!! Wayne Good RD2
I am so excited to find this page! My husband (of three years) was a naval man and always told me he knew of the USS Sumner. My father gave 99% of his life on the Luzon in WW11; what was left of him came back home, but he was army. My dad's family disintegrated early because both of his parents died in their late 30s / early 40s ... I am eager to find some roots from anyone in SC ... thank you ... !!! ({PS} I grew so pleased with the Sumner name that during my divorce, I took back my Sumner birthname and did not change it when I remarried.) I hope I can find out more if I might have some (Southern relatives???)out there ... because my dad's parents died so young and the family fractured, there is a lot I do not know about my family .... Thank you! Elizabeth
Served on AMS 56-57 in A-gang, MR-3, during the Suez Crises. I remember the scuttlebutt about the Captain throwing his hat at an Egyptian Gun-boat that was circling our DD-692 when his request to blow it out of the water was refused by higher-ups. Any one know if this can be confirmed.
Just surfed across this website and was delighted to find it. I am very impressed with how comprehensive and large it is. Great job! Wish there were many more like it. I was not on the Sumner but did serve on 3 tin cans. I invite others to visit my website which is mostly about navy, destroyers and destroyer life. There is also a tribute to my dad who was a WW2 sailor. He has written his account of the Iwo Jima landing which I have included. I think it is very interesting reading.
I served on board the AMS 70-71. I'm looking for an old shipmate "Ron Spillman". Anyone who served with me I would love to hear from you.
Enjoyed this very much. Good Luck All
Served on board from Xmas of '58 until July of '61 Left the ship as STG2. This is a great sight. I would love to hear from anyone that served when I did.
One of the best web sites I have seen, but then again the AMS always brought out the best in people. Would like to hear from any of the old COMM GANG especially being up here in Alaska...Long winter nights with not too much to do except stay inside where it is at least warm.
Some interesting comments, a good site & I'm proud to say I received the SEVENTH Fleet Citation awarded the USS ALLEN M. SUMNER (DD692) while she was flagship for COMDESDIV 162 for which I was the staff Yeoman. The SUMNER was one GOOD ship & I enjoyed my service aboard her. If anyone knows the address (snail mail) or email address for any of the Commanders of DESDIV162 I would appreciate having them. Thanks, have a happy day & God Bless. Ed <>< PS. Upon retirement in 1970 I was called by my Lord to preach His Word & was ordained as a Baptist Minister on September 16, 1978 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
Absolutely a marvelous job on the design of the web page! Met Joe Gall a few years ago when the Allen Sumner was holding a reunion in the Fall River MA area. I belong to the USS CANBERRA CA70/CAG-2, USS EDSON, USS VALDEZ reunion groups as well. Just dropped Joe a note. Keep up the good work.
Any Snipes out there from the last Med Cruise?
1965/1966 ANYONE KNOW OF WHEREABOUTS OF VALENTINO SPINELLI OR RICHARD BURGHER?
We are proud to add the USS Allen M. Sumner to our list of Destroyer links. May God bless you all.
My uncle, Tomas V. Rodriguez, served on the Sumner during the war and through the nuclear testing period. He has since passed away. I'll always remember the sea stories told by he and my father. Their generation is quickly passing into history. One day they'll all be gone, but not forgotten as long as we remember and pass on their stories.
Howdy Sumner Crew - I was DESRON 30 Logistics Officer when DD692 was in Baltimore (71-73) and did everything I could to make sure she continued to stay afloat. Stop by our website for the USS Wm M Wood (DD-715), my ship before DESRON 30 job. Good job on your website!
NEED TO UP DATE EMAIL TO BOMOO11@AOL.COM SEE Y'ALL IN MOBILE
my dad was on board from 44 to 46. his stories of the battles she was in agree with what you have on your site. his name was Walter Clark. he brought home a piece of the wing from the plane that hit her. I still have it. The AMS was one of high lights of his life. thanks for letting me visit.
I am looking for my brother, MICHAEL KUKES. He is or was in the navy. I know he was back and forth between Pensacola Florida and Guam. If anyone has any information please e-mail me. I haven't seen him in about 16 years, I would really like to reunite with him.
Hi, I'm originally from Lawrenceburg, Ky. My uncle Chief Boatswains Mate James Edward Beasley served aboard the USS Sumner from 1962-1968 and while it was in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam war. If anyone remembers or knew him please email me. I would love to talk to anyone who knew him. He passed away in Oct of 72 just a few days before he was to retire from the Navy. He was from Ky. and I know a couple of his buddies were Chief Storekeeper John D. Willis and John E. Williamson. Thanks for any help.
What a wonderful and informative site. Thank you so much for sharing it with all of us on the WWW. My father was serving on the USS Mannert L. ABELE the day she went down from enemy "plane-bombs". He often spoke of all the fine men that served our country. He would speak of them on "Honor Days" ie Vet's Day and Memorial Day, etc. He would say, " Some cannot or will not speak of the WAR, I do least we forget..." I always thought that about said it all...for all of us. I am a Proud Navy-Daughter, a Proud USAF SAC Vet's Wife, and a Proud Army MOM, our son is currently serving in the Middle East as I write this. Are our military men and women, past and present are heald in the highest regards in this military home, always :) Thanks again for such a fine tribute to them all. Anyone with any information regarding the USS Mannert L. ABELE, DD-733, please email me. I am making a keepsake for our Army Son about his Grandfather's days of service. Thank you.
I am looking for anyone who might have known my father. He entered the navy in 1941. He was a MM3C but that is all I know. His name is MM3C Norman Allen Bartz. please anything would be helpful
Dan: Thanks for the phone call last night. I'm sorry I wasn't there to talk with you. this is a great web site!!! I appreciate all the hard work people have put in to it. I know of a Walter Van Gorp who served on the Sumner during WW II. I'll try and touch base with him. He is not in good health and I doubt he has a computer. Have a great day!
I think this is a great site, I served on Sumner in 1960-62and it was the best time of my navy service.
RM3 -- served on the lady from Sep 63 til Aug 66, best part of the four year stint. great memories
I served aboard the U.S.S ALLEN M. SUMNER DD692 from September 1957 to August 1960.
Wow!! I wish my ship had this many interested squids! I don't even remember how I found this site. but it's great. I was on the Luce out of Mayport, Fl. and I wonder how many of you guys remember Hurricane Alma back in June of 66'. We all had to pull out to miss her. You guys left at 6:20 p.m.; we didn't leave till 10:29 p.m. Y'all went to Key West, I have the Deck Log if any one wants it. My question is this; how many remember the channel and jetties at Mayport? There was a 30 knot wind blowing out of the SE and waves were blowing on the decks till we got to International waters. Did any one else hit rough water in that dang channel?
HI SHIPMATES, WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING EVERY ONE IN MOBILE IN JUNE, 2002. WE WERE VERY DISAPPOINTED TO MISS THE SAN DIEGO REUNION. I KNOW YA'LL HAD A GREAT TIME. AS WE SAY IN SOUTH ALABAMA YA'LL COME ON DOWN. P.S. "JJ" WHERE ARE YOU?????
Served on AMS 1962-1963.I don't remember a lot of the guys, but I remember Joe Gall and Joe Gaddy. Gall was a yankee that wanted to be a southerner so bad he would eat grits every chance he got. Tried to teach me how to play the guitar but my fingers couldn't take it. Gaddy loved to fight. Was always wanting me to go ashore with him so we could fight. Fortunately we never did. Remember Roddy too. I'll be back to this site.
Checked out the dedication of the plaque, finally, if you haven't you need to , the poem will choke you up. Thank you Dan.
Hoping to find somebody who knew Ens.Samuel W. Reingvartz who served aboard the USS Sumner in 1945-46 and can tell me something of about this man. He would have been my 1st cousin 2 times removed. Maybe even somebody has a photo of him. Appreciate whatever knowledge you might have on Sammy.
September 11th, 2001 On this date America was attacked by cowards unknown. New York City World Trade Center Destroyed. The Pentagon on fire. Heaven help us. God bless America.
Served on DD692 from 1962-1966 in "B" Division
A call to all you old salts for prayer for one of your own. My father, SM1 Class Willie N. Lanxton who served AMS from it's Christening until 11/45? has been diagnosed with bone cancer on Friday the 17th of August. Bone biops y done 7/22 but no official word as to what kind of cancer yet. Appointment on the 30th Aug to get results and treatment protocol. Thanks!
Just wanted to say well done on the site. My grandpa Charles Blackburn served aboard her from 44-46. It's nice to match the ship to the stories I've heard. This is a great way to allow people from my generation a way to glimpse into the past and connect with their family. thanks, Andrew Blackburn 24 years old
I served aboard as a FTC during 1956 and 1957. I would like to contact anyone in the Gunnery Divison or any of the Chiefs that were aboard during that period. I retired on Twenty in 1958 . Hope to make the next reunion
Where are you? MM2 Robert James BURN. Born N.Y. Raised CA. X Nuc. Where are you? I wonder where we are all at & you came up on my list.
Stumbled upon this site while surfing the web. What an interesting walk down a long forgotten road. Best wishes to all who served aboard this fine ship.
Hi Bobby Moore. Thanks for signing the USS POWER Guestbook. I made the link live to your web site in the Guestbook. Mike L

I am a USS Orleck sailor and would like to return the BZ that Robert Cowart gave to the Orleck web page. You guys have a very nice site, too. I will add it to my favorites list. I served in the IC Gang on the Orleck 2/66 - 5/69. I am also a Plank Owner of the USS Spruance DD-963, where I converted to the GSE rate. Well done on your web site.
My wife Karen and I just returned from San Diego, where we enjoyed our first AMS reunion. After all the fun & fellowship that was had I'm surprised that there aren't more entry's on this page. We met some old friends and some new ones. We even met a princess....
Just spent 2 hours at your site, served on the Hugh Purvis DD 709 from 1962 to 1966 had the pleasure of the 13 days in October in harbor patrol Gitmo, loved your site and the plans for post Fram will be copied for the 1/96 scale model of the Purvis that I am building any pictures of the class would be appreciated
Served from 63-66. STG3 Ships Swimmer. Turned out I was the only on onboard that would fit in the one wet suit. (110lbs) Did a lot of torpedo recovery and one body in the Dominican Crisis. We had gunners shooting the sharks that had eaten most of the body. Got some photo's to send and hope to contact some of my old buddies.
I served as SM2 on the bridge from 64-66 swapped with SM1 Blackwell to the Cone out of Charleston. I loved my duty on the AMS Would love to hear from any old shipmates from that time, thank you for this site
My father, GM2c Vincent Frement Mc Caul, is listed among the USS Sumner's plank owners. But, I must sadly report that he passed away on 25-Apr-82 in Yuma, AZ. However, I can report that he continued his career in the Navy, changed rates from GM to ET, and rose to the rank of ETC, before he retired from active service in 1956. He then took a job with Philco (Radar) Corp as an Electronic Technical Rep at (then) Vincent AFB, Yuma, AZ, and that's "how" the family ended up in Yuma; however, the "sea-story" he always told as to "how" he got to Yuma was that "...in the Navy all I saw was miles and miles of ocean and no BEACH, so I came to Yuma where there's miles and miles of BEACH but NO ocean!"
My father, James O Tomlinson, was KIA while serving on the Sumner on 6 Jan 45. As a retired Army warrant officer and Vietnam veteran, I proudly display the Purple Heart that was sent to me when I was only 4 years old. I am very interested in contacting anyone who knew my Dad. I believe he was called Tom or Jimmy by his friends. I would also like to know what other decorations he earned and whether or not he was a plankholder.
SERVED ON AMS APR 51 TO SEPT 52,LEFT AMS IN CHARLESTOWN, MASS IN SHIPYARD, TRANSFERRED TO USS ENGLISH DD696. HAD SOME GOOD FRIENDS WHILE ON BOARD NAMELY WARREN NEYE YN2, WORKED WITH WARREN IN SHIP'S OFFICE, I WAS YN3, USED TO GO ON WEEKENDS TO VALLEY VIEW, PA WITH WARREN, MY SKIPPER WHEN I WENT ON BOARD WAS CDR DWIGHT JOHNSON.
Served aboard the 692 1962,1963
I am the Grandson of F2c James Oliver Tomlinson 43-45 who was KIA at Lingayen Gulf. This is a wonderful site which I will continue to visit to learn more about the ship on which my Grandfather served. Hats off to all of the b rave sailors who have served their country throughout history, and those who continue to remember them.
Served on Sumner from 1957 to 1961. I was a Machinery Repairman, Second Class upon discharge. Worked in R- Division A-gang. Stood throttle watch in after engine room and forward engine room when ship was under way. Would like to hear from old shipmates especially those from A-gang.
Crewmember 70-71. Great site, will be back.
On the crew of the Sumner 1968-1969.
What an awsome privelige to have this compilation of information. I served on the Samuel N Moore DD747 1948 1949 as SN. Went on to VF-51 Korea. Then CAP. "Tin Can Service." WOW!!
Have you ever had the wind blown out of your sails. Well I have, when I heard I wasn't the oldest long timer. Another shipmate was on 10 years, but that was before me. Can you imagine how nutty he was when he got off. Ha.Ha!
SERVED ON AMS FROM MARCH, 1955 TO FEB., 1957. BT3 IN FORWARD FIRE ROOM.
I saw this Eulogy for a Veteran on the net and I thought the Crew might like it. Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight, I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die. author unknown
Just talked to Wayne Brandsma and got e-mail from Bob Kearns. The Sumner site is great. Looking forward to getting in touch with other crew mates from 1968-1969.
RE: Sumner Website. A big "E" to everyone involved! I was blown away when I first found the site. Not sure I can make this year's reunion, but will definitely plan on 2002. Am living on Whidbey Island, Washington, home to Oak Harbor and the recently "detained" 24 airmen. Would love to hear from anyone who served between '66 and '68, especially former FT's, GM's, ST's and BM's.
Just found the great Sumner website--congratulations to all involved in its design and upkeep--very impressive--would love to hear from anybody onboard from '66-'68, especially former FT's, GM's and R division guys. Anybody know what Francis Gerfen, Dave Kinney or Gerry Stinson is doing these days?
I got an email from my Father this morning to check out this website, he wrote remember I was on this ship frm 1965-1967 you might want to go check it out and show Lacey (my daughter) some family history on me.....so here I am and enjoying it.
Served on the LADY 50 51 with ROY STOKER, ED CHILDERS, BILL BASSETT BEAVER. MM3 in aft engine room. I'd like to hear from any of the men that may have served with me. Great job on the site.
I am the oldest son of Signalman !st Class Willie N. Lanxton who was an original crew member of the Sumner. He was at the 2000 reunion in Washington (Virginia). My son, Rodney A. Lanxton, was searching on Yahoo for his name a nd my father's name popped up with the link to the Sumner page. Boy was he excited! And he called me, I called my next older brother who lives near my Dad and is internet active, and my Dad to tell them of the Sumner page. I talked to my Dad at work one day for 20-30 minutes telling him what I was finding. He would say "yep, I remember that". I was reading from Prigge's Log about the ship's history and my Dad told how the Navy could NOT fit Prigge for shoes and had to give him money to go to a shoe st ore to buy shoes! This is a great tribute to the Sumner and it's many servants over the great career of the ship. Keep up the good work!
SERVED ON THE LAST MED CRUISE,THE BLACK SEA ADVENTURE,THE RUSSIAN SUB THING AND THE JORDANIAN CRISIS IN MAIN CONTROL.WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE THAT WAS IN MAIN CONTROL THEN.
I served on the AMS in 1961. Don't remember the dates but it was just before and during FRAM overhaul. Then I transferred to the Hawkins. I got out of the navy in May 1962.Feb 1959 - 1961 was aboard the Stribling. This is a gr eat site. Keep up the good work.
Just found this guest book today.April 2, 2001. WOW..I served on the Sumner 3 years 5 months ande 7 days. Starting Dec. l948 thru May 1952. EM3..Some good shipmates were Keith Sullivan..Roy Stoker..Jack Fidinger..Bud Salmela.. Still keep in touch with Sullivan. We toured the Med plus every port in the West Indies.Hope to see you in San Diego.
I did my first middie cruise on AM Sumner in 1955 to Bergen, Norway, as part of DESRON 16 which included Ingraham, Maddox, English, Damato, Dyess, and Gearing. How's that for memory? On the other hand, I can't remember much about the cruise, because I spent most of it sea sick. Sumner was the squadron flag, so everyone lived up-tight. Wonderful experience.
This is a wonderful site for a great ship. My brother Maurice Warren served on board the AMS. We have shared many stroies about our past before and after finding this Web site. As for myself, I served on the USS Hawkins DD873,1 970-71. I've always been proud to be a "Tin-Can-Sailor". Keep the Spirit alive. Thanks.
Hi, I served on the A.M.S. from Sept. 52 til July 55. I spent all my time in #2 engine room. Made MM 2 while onboard. Great site and great reunions too. Anyone that has not been to one, get there! Would like to hear from old ship mates that served at the same time I did.
I just located the web site and love it! SUMNER was my home from 1968-70 as I caught the ship in overhaul in Charleston under Capt. Beaman, made the Med-cruise in 1969 under Capt. Meacham, and departed in 1970 under Capt. Laighton. My fondest memories are Ens. Gottschalk flying DASH to try to set the Atlantic Fleet record that Capt. Meacham wanted so badly; the Med cruise port visits to Venice; Shore Patrol Officer in Sousse, Tunisia; shooting down a drone during gunnery exercises in the Med and having the drone squadron C.O. present us the propeller as a souvenir; and the many "unscheduled" trips from Mayport to Guantanamo to serve as NGFS ship. I hope to hear from other 68-70 SUMNER shipmates, and look forward to readi ng about you.
Served aboard Sumner 68-70. Currently working in Alaska and living on my boat in Chula Vista, Ca. Just found out about the site, its great. I'm going to try and make the reunion this June. Hello to all shipmates.
SERVED ON BOARD AS AN RDS DEC.1966 THRU OCT.1969

I had the h onor to climb the mast while underway in the North Sea to remove the surface search radar drive motor just before we entered the northsea canal on our way to liberty in Ansterdam, Holland. October 57 I think.
I served on the wm.r.rush DDR714 54-58 MM1. Anyone out there attend MM school great lakes late 54?
My father Ralph Politano served on the USS COOPER. He was one of the few that survived. This is a wonderful web site. Thanks for all the hard work and information.
GREAT SITE. I WAS MM ON RUSH DDR-714 FROM 62-64 OUT OF MAYPORT FL. GOOD TO SEE SUCH INTEREST IN OLD SHIPMATES.
Have not made any entries since aug.1999 but I look in frequently. Was aboard AMS early 1960 until summer 1963. Two MED cruises and cuban crisis.
A very good site I was on the Orleck DD886 from 56/60 Cant beat the tin can navy Murph EM2
Great web site. Robert Cowart lead me to your site. He sign the USS ROWAN log book. I'm the Secretary of the USS ROWAN DD-405/DD-782 Reunion Association. I'm just learning HTML and hope to make a web site for the reunion association. We now have three site, witch are keep up by shipmates. However they don't hold a candle to yours. I only hope I can do as good with ours as you have with this. I've looked at several other sites, but up to now yours is the best. Your background does make it a little hard to read it all, but it is nice. Your fellow navy shipmate. Loren R. Melton, iceburg72@msn.com
This is a great site. It brings back some memories from when I was on the Massey and Fox(778&779)in 69 to 71. Good job Mates! Doc
I served aboard Sumner from 1958 to 1962,came aboard as FA and left MM3 was in the after engine room and then moved all the up to the forward engine room, went on to the Submarine forse and served on the boats untill I retired i n 1977.I live in Boca Raton,FL.with my wife Judy.We had 5 kids and we now have 10 grandchildren,we are retired and traval alot in our motor home.
Hello to all you Destroyer men, I was invited aboard and visit your site from one of your former Shipmates with whom I chat with on the Tin Can Sailors site. I'm glad to have taken him up on his invitation and have throughly enjoyed my tour aboard. She passes zone inspection with a 4.0 score, "Ship shape and Bristol fashion". Although I had not the opportunity to serve aboard one of these original "cans", I'm proud to have carried out the tradition and the privilege to carry the moniker of a Tin Can Sailor. My first two ships of four were cans; USS Dewey DLG-14/DDG-45 and USS Valdez FF-1096. Congratulations to all involved on this exceptional site and please keep up the good work as I plan to visit again. As an aside, I'm recommending you for a Navy Commendation Medal, BZ!
I believe my grandfather was on this ship in 1945. He was shot on March 8, 1945. His name is Lester William Adams and he was a cook on the USS Sumner. If anyone has any information on him please e-mail me. The web site is v ery interesting. I am just now learning about my grandfather and would love to know all that I can. Thanks to anyone who can help.Webmasters note: This was the other Sumner, a surveying ship named after Thomas Sumner.

Doing family history research, and by luck and chance, happened across this well-constructed and informational site. I am looking for any information any former shipmates may be able to give me on my father, Kenneth Wayne Stockard (rank of EM 2 then), who served from 1969-70 on the Sumner. I haven't seen him in years, and any information about what he was like, what his job was, would be appreciated (especially information in general on any of the things the ship itself went through, and what events occurred to its crew during this time period) I want to know anything. Thanks. Army Spec. Jennifer Castonguay (Stockard) Please feel free to e-mail.In follow-up to my previous posting - My family history search has led me to discover that my father worked in the engine room area. Also wanted to mention, if it helps to jog the memory -- He was fairly tan and athletic, from Alabama, approximately 21-22, with brown hair, one blue eye, and one green eye.
I just found your website. I hope this helps with the history of the Allen M. Sumner. After returning from the Prinz Eugen at Bikini, I took over the Post Office on the Allen M. Sumner. I was the navy mail clerk from Oct. 1946 to Nov.1947. We left for Bremerton, Washington Oct. 22, 1946 to go into dry dock to have the hull scraped and the evaporators cleaned because of radiation. We later returned to San Diego where we joined Task Force 38 with 8 other Destroyers, 2 Carriers, a nd 2 cruisers. Went to Pearl, than to Sydney. Upon Leaving Australia we went to Manila, Guam, Truk and the other islands on the way to Singtow China and Yokasuka Japan. Returned to Pearl and had speed run back to the states with the rest of Destroyer Divi sion 72.
My stepdad was a tin-can sailor, and so was my next door neighbor. Both in Fletcher class in wwII. I have more respect for destroyermen than any other warriors. I did 22 years in the USAF and didn't experience what those two men did in their combined three years in 3rd/5th fleet.
My Dad served on your sister ship USS Moale DD693,during WW2. I want to thank you for a great website. I wish the Moale had one like it.I have linked Moale's Destroyer's On line Site to this web site. Thanks again. Bill Britigan
Served aboard the Sumner from Nov 58 to Oct 60. I reported Aboard while she was in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. I made one trip to the Med during that period. I would like to hear from any of the radarman who served aboard during that period.
I had the delight to spend the night on the Allen M Sumner whilst in Vietnam in 1967. I was in the Australian Navy onboard HMAS HOBART and was transferred to the Sumner to assist in repairs to your ECM equipment. It was an interesting experience I will never forget. All the best to all the "Old Boys" that I came in contact with Colin Benporath
I served as a DCA from Sept 63 through Sept 65 when I was transferred to FAAWTC, Dam Neck, Va. Made the Northern european cruise in '64 and the Dominican rucus in '65. I still remember taking on ammo from an AE in a rough sea a nd having the powder casings bouncing off the deck as the pallet slammed the deck from the highwire and burst open.
Served aboard Sumner ("Tuneful") for less than one year 1958, then transferred to USS McCARD DD 822. Discharged 7/1959. This is a GREAT website.
My father Thomas E. Lenehan JR. Electronic Technician's mate 1st class served 10/3/42 thru 1/18/46. Any contacts can be made thru his son Joseph Lenehan per the above E-mail.
A philatelic Treasure trove! Great site for a great ship!
JOHN CURRY JUST TOLD ME ABOUT SITE. AWESOME!!! I WAS ABOARD IN '65/'66 BEFORE BEING TRANSFERED TO THE US STRONG,DD-758
I'm the webmaster for www.usspower.com web site. I would like to thank Robert Cowert for visiting and signing our gustbook. I will be posting a link to your great site. I served on the USS POWER from 1962 - 1965 in the first division. You have a great site. Mike Lillis:
OUTSTANDING!SITE
Terrific web site. Without a doubt, one of the best I've seen. The information gathered is incredible. SUMNER sailors should be forever grateful for all the hard work that has gone into preserving her history.
Served from 4/64 thru 12/66 in Mayport, from Yellowstone AD27. 1st.Div to 2nd Div, Pointer on Mount 53, Deck-ape then cook and night baker. Left just before Viet-Nam cruise for Seabees and ended up in "Country" 1969-1970. Anybo dy remember the slip-of-the-tongue announcement on the Dependant's cruise from Mayport by BM3 Mike McCarty about the use of foul language on board ? Liberty buddy with Danny Raper and his brother (YN) Would like to hear from any old crew mates during that time. Retired 1983, 20 years day for day as senior E6 equipment operator in the Seabees, 16yrs in grade. Loved every day of it, even the bad ones, would do it again
Served onboard 692 from 10/66-11/68. Only "small boy duty" in a 32 year career! All other duty aboard carriers (six to be exact). Don't hold that against me. Retired in '87 as DKCM. Was aboard for the 'Nam cruise. Many go od memories. This is a fantastic site to visit. Would love to hear from anyone who cares to write.
Can someone identify for me the fleet oilers from which the Sumner is shown refueling? My dad was on the USS Mattaponi (AO-41). I can see her hull number in one picture but would like to know if she is depicted in any of the other pictures. Like your site!

I was an FTG on the Sumner from 70 to 71. I served later on a couple of Guided Missile Frigates but I'll always have a soft place in my heart for the old tin can. Great job on the site. Reading the WW II history was very interesting.
This is a terrific website. My grandfather's brother served on the USS Cooper (DD-695) and was lost in the Phillipines on Dec. 2, 1944. I had no knowledge of this battle until visiting this site. Thank you for helping me to learn about his bravery and sacrifice.
It was great to see the history of the DD692. I served aboard in 1950.
You're all invited to visit the USS Rainier (AE-5) site to find out how those ammo ship sailors managed to keep Sumner supplied with all that ordnance.

I only found out about the site in the last two weeks with the help of Michael Boulton. I look forward to contacting and hearing from some of the people that were onboard the Sumner during those two years. Jack
served on the Sumner 1966 - 1969 GMG3 in MT 51 After 30 years I still miss the Sumner and the shipmates I served with.
I am not former USN; in fact I am not even American. But I know a great ship and a great destroyer class when I see one. I also admire the courage and professionalism of US Navymen. Thank you for your service and sacrifices ag ainst communism in SEAsia.(It's your politicians I don't care for.) I am sure the USS Allen M Sumner had cruised the waters off Malaysia (Straits of Malacca; South China Sea). One of my most cherished childhood memories is visiting the USS Oklahoma City perhaps 35 years ago when it called at one of our ports. This is a great site reflecting your love of and dedication to your ship. I am visiting all Sumner and Gearing sites I can find! Anchors Aweigh!!!
Served 1967 - 1969

Like some others, I just stumbled on this site. It's great. Brought back good memories. Served on the AMS in '68 & '69. Did unforgettable Gitmo, N. Atlantic, and Med. cruises with a great group of shipmates. My best Navy m emories were during my time on the AMS. I still have my Zippo lighter with ship's profile and lots of photos.
My father Theodore J. Georgitso Jr. (Ted/Teddy) served from 1951-1952. He passed away in January 1982. I would love to hear from anyone who might remember him and have a story or memory to share. Thank you.
I really appreciate hearing from the Association. You all are really doing a great job. Reading through the list of people I knew brings back memories of the best time of my life. I was aboard from 68-71 as a member of the D ASH crew.

I served on Sumner during the cruise to Viet Nam. I transferred in oct/nov of 67 to Bethesda, MD for an HM school. It is gratifying to see several of my shipmates still around. I retired from Naval service after 20 years as HM1. Currently living and working in Wilmington, DE.
I served aboard during 1953 as an ETSN when we took the Lake Champlain to Korea. It was a very pleasant surprise to find this GREAT, GREAT website. Congrats to all involved. I will transmit some photos as soon as I get the scanner going. Whatever happened to "Whizzer" White, Jimmy Padilla, Fambrini, Scaramouche and the other guys in "O" division. Does anyone remember that wild liberty in Manila when we got stranded ashore after the typhoon and the skipper of the Lake Champlain couldn't believe we were in the U.S. Navy? How about his reaction on the hanger deck when he spied a guy in the mob in k haki pants, barefoot and shirtless? It was the chaplain from one of the other cans! Ah youth -- where did it go so fast?
THIS SITE HAS BROUGHT BACK MANY MEMORIES.SERVED ABOARD FROM 7/68-6/70.MM3 MAIN CONTROL WITH BOBBY MOORE PETE ANDRUSYK RON DECARLO LEE BLEDSOE BILLY CHICLIN CORLY BENSON. My kids found this site and showed it to me. I'm thrilled to know this site exists. I served on the AMS from April 70-73. Will be visiting this site more often. I do know of three ex-shipmates living in Baltimore and West Virg inia. I'll check my addressbook for the town in W Virginia. The sailor there was Booker T. Combest EM1. The two in Baltimore are Charles and Richard Reed. They were DC3 and EM3 respectively.
Served on board AMS from 57-63. Didn't know there was a website with this much info available. I retired in 72 as a Chief Signalman. Would welcome any e-mail from shipmates during years aboard.
Great site. Served from 7/64 until 5/65 in weapons dept.
Served aboard from late 57 to mid 60. From S/A to QM2. Home ports Norfolk and Mayport. Two Med cruises, two Red Swa patrols and a couple of hurricanes.

I would like to say Hi to everyone that served on the Sumner from 66 to 69. I stayed i n the Navy for 21 (20 years, 9 months, 5 days) and made PNC. I retired in July 86 off of recruiting duty here in Elkhart, In. I married the girl that YN3 Johnson and YN2 Stone fixed me up with. We met in March 68 and got married in Oct 68 before the GIT MO cruise. I'm now the Veterans Service Officer for the County and work with veterans and their families. I might well as stayed on active duty because the paper drill is twice as bad with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Ihope to hear from differen t shipmates. I've already been in contact with Scott Kopfstein in Ohio. Your Shipmate, Gary M. Whitehead, PNC(SW),USNR-R

Hands down the best ship's site I've visited to date. BZ to those who made it possible.
What an amazing wealth of information !!!I am at present building a 1/48th scale working R/C model of the Allen M Sumner(@ 98 inchs in length) as she was during WWII and although I have aquired some books relating to the class nothing gave me as much insight or provided the detail of the life of this ship. Your Web Site is to be highly commended for the amount of detail and information provided.I enjoyed the reports and deck logs as they seem to bring eveything to life.I will attempt t o forward photos of the model during construction as and when possible. Also would it be possible for me to purchase items from the Ships Store using VISA from here in the UK ??Keep up the excellent work on The most detailed Naval Website that I have visit ed.
MIDWATCH, FEBRUARY, 1968, JUST AFTER THE PUEBLO GOT GRABBED BY THE N. KOREANS. CRUISING ALONG ESCORTING A SPY SHIP OFF HAVANA. STANDING PORT LOOKOUT I SPOTTED A RED RUNNING LIGHT COMING FROM WEST TO EAST. THEN A GREEN RUNNING LIGHT CROSS ING OUR "T". THEN IT WAS RED AGAIN COMING STRAIGHT DOWN OUR STARBOARD SIDE. BY THIS TIME I WAS ON THE HELM AS IT PUT A SEARCHLIGHT ON US AND SIGNALED "IDENTIFY. OVER 2 HOURS HAD ELAPSED. THEY KNEW WHO WE WERE. THE CAPTAIN ORDERED "TELL THEM UNITED STATES NAVY". THEY DIDNT STOP. NEITHER DID WE. THEY DIDNT COME BACK. WE STAYED. END OF STORY.
I served aborad Sumner from 68 to 70. I just received this letter about the association and I can't stop looking at this great web site,oh what memories you hav e brought back. I'm trying to remember names from the 69-70 crew. I look forward to sharing photos and stories in Washington. My best to all those who have served.

I spent 2yrs on the old A+M. 68 to 70. Had a lot of good times. Found this site by chance, glad I did. I will book mark it.
I WAS NEVER ON THE SUMNER, ALTHOUGH I AM LISTED AS A CREWME MBER 69/70. WHERE DID THIS ENTRY COME FROM? RETIRED USN 1988.GOD BLESS AMERICA!!
Answer: The entry in the Sumner Site's muster list comes from the Quarterly BuPers reports and the Ship's Personnel Diary. The entry with your name comes from one of two possible sources. First, there was another BT2 with the same name who did serve aboard or second you were listed in the Quarterly Report with a future arrival date but the orders were changed prior to reporting aboa rd. In the second case you may never even have known about the orders. My own entries in the Report began appearing in Sumner's records even before I knew about my transfer to her.
I served on the Sumner from 68 to 71 working on the DASH helicopter system.
On Board 1970-71. This is a great site. I was a skivvie waver 3rd. A lot of good times in Florida. Jax's Beach, Neptune Beach, yep some goooood times.

After my stint as Communications Officer from 196 9-71, I finished my naval career at NavComSta KeyWest. I don't think too many days go by that I don't think of my time on old 692. Recently some friends of mine were discussing the book "A Perfect Storm" in which a fishing boat goes through a hurricane. I told them, "Heck that's nothing, we went through the same hurricane twice! Once as it went North, and again as it turned on us and came South!" Hello to all my shipmates, especially RM3 Henry.
