CDD120 in SUMNER is OCE. 0922 Conducted radar calibration exercise D-4 (USF10A). 1054 Fired main battery offset firing practice at ranges 12,000 and 16,000 yds; target USS COOPER. 1318 Commenced shore bombardment exercises as prescribed in CTF 15 underway training bulletin; target Western and KAHOOLAWEE, Is., T. H. (Area C-4). 2000 Suffered casualty to stable element necessitating culmination of SUMNER's participation in firing of exercises; remainder of division conducted exercises while SUMNER stood clear. 2215 DesDeiv120 completed exercises and formed column for night cruising (Areas C-4 & C-6). VF PPPI tested for capacity at spotting fall of shot in offset practice. Results; slashes observed and fair estimate of spot could be made, bearing in mind orientation of B scope pips for target angle.

0700 Returned area C-4. DesDiv120 less SUMNER continued shore bombardment exercises; SUMNER standing clear of firing ships. 0800 Conducted tests of VPR equipment brought aboard for experimentation by Lt. Comdr. H. E. STANLY, E(V)S, USNR. Southern coast of KAHOOLAWEE, Is., possessing ideal topographical characteristics of sheer cliffs, was used for tests. Results: Comparison of navigational and VPR fixes showed VPR reasonably accurate for navigation off shore and use in conduct of shore bombardment but not of sufficient accuracy to be used in place of visual bearings for fixes when the latter are obtainable. VPT tends to show position as further off shore than actual position. For use in shore bombardment of hostile land, particularity at night, the VPR is deemed an invaluable aid. 1125 All exercises of shore bombardment completed; formed column less INGRAHAM. INGRAHAM formed 1200 yds. on port beam of MOALE for tests of VF PPPI and tracking exercises. Results of VF test same as previous test. Found that lower edge of pip on B scope must be used for range and center of pip for bearing disregarding slight jumps in bearing of the pip since they are caused by roll of ship. Noted also that range calibration has to be coordinated with SG ranges separately from SG calibration. 1742 Moored starboard side to DE 219 at berth X-20, P. H. with USS YOSEMITE in same berth.

0540 Underway in company with USS MOALE and submarine S-41 for radar jamming and anti-submarine exercises scheduled in ComDesPac's serial Op-0226 of 15 Oct. 44. Authority: ComDesPac's 151804. 0945 Conducted attack runs on submarine alternating with MOALE, at the same time testing radars for effectiveness of jamming attempts. Results: Even though correct frequency of ship's radars used by jamming ship, the jamming was seldom observed during a period of and hour and a half and when observed was ineffective in that targets could be maintained through the jamming. Operations conducted west of Barber's Point, Oahu, T. H. 1600 Conducted fighter direction exercise. Results: Difficulty encountered in attempting to direct interception over land echoes, particularly with so many friendly planes operating nearby not engaged in the exercise. 1653 USS MOALE assumed duty as escort of submarine; proceeded to Pearl Harbor. 1856 Moored starboard side to USS INGRAHAM in berth X-19, P.
